GEORGETOWN, SC — The Village Group has received a $25,000 grant from the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina to support its efforts to educate, enrich and uplift young people in Georgetown County.

The Foundation awards grants to nonprofits that strive to reduce poverty throughout South Carolina. The Village Group is one of 93 organizations funded this spring.

“We are honored to receive this grant from the Sisters of Charity Foundation,” said Ray C. Funnye, Executive Director of The Village Group. “As we celebrate 20 years, this support is important in growing our mission of creating a brighter future for our community’s next leaders through college and career readiness, cultural education, and economic development.”

The Village Group operates an after-school program, Plantersville Enrichment Academy, during the school year and Plantersville Summer Academy for six weeks in the summer. It also provides services to improve literacy, cultural enrichment, career readiness, and health including The Village Flyers, a biking/mentorship program. It just embarked on a campaign to build the Plantersville Cultural Complex on a 10-acre site in historical rural Georgetown County.

In this cycle of funding, the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina awarded grants totaling $1,287,000 to nonprofit organizations across the state. The $25,000 grant to The Village Group will fund general operating expenses.

Lee Pearson, Chair of the Foundation’s Board, said: “The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina is committed to reducing poverty through action, advocacy, and leadership. It is an honor to support, partner with, and learn from these organizations as we work to create a South Carolina where everyone can thrive.”
