The Village Group Afterschool and Summer Programs

Two new initiatives from the U.S. Department of Education sever as reminders of the vital role of afterschool and summer learning programs. The nature of how our children’s education is formatted has forever changed as we continue to navigate the lasting effects of the pandemic. Effective afterschool programs provide learning settings that bring a wide range of benefits to youth, families, and communities. These programs can support social, emotional, cognitive, and academic development, reduce risky behaviors, promote physical health, and provide a safe and supportive environment for children and youth.

Partnering with five national organizations, the Department’s new “Engage Every Student Initiative” is working to provide connections and assistance to schools and communities as they expand access to afterschool and summer learning programs. Similarly, the Department’s “National Partnership for Student Success” program is bringing together school districts, nonprofit partners, colleges, and universities to train, place, and support 250,000 new tutors and mentors – addressing the pandemic-driven staffing shortages affecting out-of-school-time programs across the nation.

These initiatives couldn’t come at a better time, as we work to help children recover from the academic and social challenges of the pandemic. That’s our focus at The Village Group. If you’re a parent of a school-age child, now’s the time to make sure they’re signed up for afterschool programming this fall!

The Village Group’s mission is to serve as a bridge for the students and families in Georgetown County. We are committed to providing education opportunities, college-career readiness, and enrichment activities to make positive changes in their lives.
