Food Justice

Supporting stronger families in our community requires a focus on health and wellness. The Plantersville Community residents live in a food desert with the nearest supermarket 13 miles away. The Village Group works to bridge the gap and provide food justice and security.

Fed by its rivers and fertile fields, the western part of the county once produced crops of cotton and indigo. Unfortunately, Plantersville is now among the most economically and educationally disadvantaged areas in the region.

The Village Group acts as a conduit for 28,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables distributed and 8,000 meals served each year.

FRESH FOOD

Twice a year – in the spring and in the fall — The Village Group partners with Lowcountry Food Bank in first-come first-served distribution of fresh produce at Plantersville Elementary School.

HOLIDAY HELP

In partnership with the Annual Community Christmas Dinner Charity, we help serve over 500 hearty and delicious meals to residents of the Pee Dee and Plantersville Communities. Also, every holiday season, we help make sure families in our community can have a healthy dinner at home partnering with the Tamsberg Family Foundation to distribute free turkeys and ham.

SUMMER TIME FOOD

Plus, a valuable part of the Plantersville Summerville Academy is offering three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack) at a crucial time when many children are missing a school lunch.
